Scott Bader to showcase 100% bio-based fire-retardant resins at InnoTrans 2024

Scott Bader is set to unveil its innovative bio-based resins, Crestafire® Bio P1-8001 and P1-8003, at InnoTrans 2024 (24-27 September, Hall 8.2, Stand 260, Berlin).  The new chemistry offers a sustainable alternative to traditional phenolic compositions, delivering high performance and fire resistance with a lower environmental impact.

The global manufacturer is bringing to market the two formulations derived from sugar cane waste. These will provide rolling stock manufacturers with a 100% bio-based solution that meets Europe’s stringent EN45545 standards for fire, smoke, and toxicity (FST) control. This is a significant development for the rail industry where decarbonisation efforts are especially complex because of heightened safety and performance issues concerned with delivering durable interior and exterior components.

The performance of Crestafire Bio resins is so impressive that EN45545 FST standards are met using them without gelcoat as stand-alone solutions.  Furthermore, only water vapour is released during the curing stage, meaning operators are not exposed to potentially harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Alongside the successful exploration of bio-based materials, the company’s ongoing collaboration with multiaxial fabrics manufacturer, SAERTEX, is pioneering ‘lightweight’ composite components with improved structural and fire safety performance. Showcasing the latest Scott Bader SAERTEX Crestafire LEO systems will also be a focus at InnoTrans, with a reduction in the weight of rolling stock leading to lower energy consumption and increased fuel/battery efficiency.

Visit the Scott Bader stand (Hall 8.2, 260) to explore the opportunities that both the new Crestafire Bio and improved Crestafire LEO present for rail OEMs and partnering companies.
