Iconic Amsterdam art piece rebuilt using Crestapol® 1213A

Scott Bader and Jules Dock Development have worked in partnership to rebuild ‘De Muur’, an iconic Amsterdam art piece, using Crestapol 1213A urethane acrylate resin.

Jules Dock Development are an innovative company focussed on developing creative solutions using composite materials. They are active in the building, infrastructure, marine and wind energy markets.

‘De Muur’ is an icon in Amsterdam. The original art piece, designed by Alfred Eikelenboom in 1987 and built from steel, needed to be replaced due to rust.

The new 15 metre wide and 5 metre high distinctive red wall, built by Jules Dock Development, is made from Scott Bader’s fire retardant Crestapol 1213A urethane acrylate resin and has a weight of only 4000kg.

The large composite art piece was built using multiple segments, each 2 metres wide and 5 metres tall. To obtain the required strength and stiffness a vacuum infusion process was used to manufacture the segments. The vacuum infusion process also helped achieve a high quality finish that is a close resemblance to the renowned original design.

The new ‘De Muur’ art piece is situated in a public park, and therefore it is required to meet very strict fire safety regulations.

Crestapol 1213A meets both European and Global FST standards whilst providing high strength, an excellent surface finish and it is halogen free. This combination of properties made it the perfect resin for the new art piece.

Fire classification BS1D0 was achieved after Efectis, fire security experts in The Netherlands, performed several fire safety tests on the vacuum infused laminates.

Lars van der Linden Project Engineer, Jules Dock Development “Scott Bader’s Crestapol resin offered us the perfect solution for creating a new ‘De Muur’ art piece that will stand the test of time whilst achieving European FST standards and providing a quality surface finish. It has been a pleasure working with Scott Bader on this project. We are delighted with the outcome.”
